Dear Yuletide Author!
Oct. 18th, 2014 01:34 am Hello, sweet yuletide author!
Thank you for signing up and nominating my lovely little fandoms--I hope you have a really great time writing for me.
Things I love: big hugs, 'bottle episode' plots, people understanding and supporting each other without needing to be good at communication, intimacy and (well-placed) trust, trinkets and mementoes, traditions and routines, gentle teasing, stories in the same tone/style as the canon, feeling comfortable/at home in new places or with new people, teaching/learning new skills, clothes-sharing or swapping.
Shipping-wise, I like: romance and affection, fumbly awkward sex that is still thoroughly enjoyed by everybody involved, super-competent sex where those involved know exactly what the other/s like, and affectionate relationships where no sex ever happens (maybe just a lot of cuddling). Any rating is absolutely fine by me; I have no preference there!
Firm things to avoid: I have triggers to do with grief, especially around public grief and commemoration. I can handle a very minor character death if it’s offscreen and/or canonical, and the fic is not about it, but I avoid almost all fic that goes beyond that. Please don't dwell on grief, funerals, or anything along those lines.
Things I don’t enjoy and/or don't want to read for yuletide: Gore/violence/horror, serious illness, underage or teacher/student relationships, abusive relationships, or sexual assault. I'm not generally a fan of supernatural AUs (werewolves, vampires, etc.), crack fic, jealousy, excessive embarrassment, genderswaps or bends, unrequited love, secret relationships, or apocalypse scenarios.
Fandom notes:

Pride (2014)
-Mark, Steph and Joe
Working class struggle + queer struggle + jokes!!! I am so in love with this film. SO IN LOVE. I saw it twice at the pictures and sobbed solidly for the last half hour, both times, which is a rave review in my books! And it's so funny! Unfortunately, I don't think it has a set release date for DVD yet, and I haven't seen any copies of it floating about online, so if you haven't seen it in the cinema I'm not sure how you can for now.
The characters I'd most like to read about are Mark, Steph and Joe (in any combination, and don't feel you have to include all of them if you don't want to). I would rather you not draw more from their real counterparts' lives than is used in the film, though, wherever possible? I hope that's okay with you. I prefer thinking of them as fictionalised characters. Please bear my triggers in mind with this fandom, too. I know an absolutely amazing story could be written that deals with AIDS and how it relates to this film's story, but I really not sure I'd be able to read it. I'd also prefer not to read about Joe's relationship with his family.
I would love to read about Joe finding his way in life, after LGSM winds down. Does he live with Steph for a long time, or does that arrangement only last a few nights? Does he go back to college, or get a job, or try to juggle both? Does he find someone to love? Does Steph try to set him up with her male single friends? I'd like to see people happy- maybe Steph could find someone who cares for her, or Mark could throw himself introducing Joe to the gay scene in London. Maybe Joe meets someone, and gets serious (or just excited) enough about them that he brings them home to meet his new London family. Shipfic about Joe and Mark falling in love would be wonderful, but I have no problem at all with you introducing original characters for romantic interests (or for any other purpose!) or writing gen, and won't enjoy a fic any less for it. So long as you keep the characters' sexual orientations in line with canon, I'm happy.
For fic set during the events of the film, I'd love anything that was a slice-of-life for that time. How does everyone else occupy themselves while Mike counts a day's takings, for example? Where did they go/what did they do after either of the parades? Who decorated the collection buckets? Who bought the van, and chose the logo? Who helped most/least with cleaning up after Pits and Perverts? Who makes sure Mark eats and sleeps occasionally while he's trying to plan everything? What was Christmas like for Steph at Jonathan and Gethin's?

The Tiffany Aching Series - Terry Pratchett
-Tiffany Aching
Tiffany Aching is super precious to me. My favourite parts of the books are how she grows and matures through them, despite having already been a very grounded, smart girl to start with. Any story with elements of that theme involved will make me a very happy girl. I also love the folklore of the books; Tiffany's connection to the land, the practicality of witching, etc.
I have only requested Tiff, because she's all that really matters to me, but if you want to include anyone else alongside her that's fine by me. Of the nominated characters, I'm fond of Annagramma and I do ship Preston/Tiffany. I would rather not receive fic with sex in it for this fandom, but romance is fine.
I'd love to read about a slice-of-life for Tiff. Maybe a particular problem someone comes to her with, or a day out in a new place on the Disc? You could tell me about where she lives, once she's established herself as a grown witch. Or futurefic, like is she ever someone's Granny Aching, and how does she feel about that? How does her relationship with the Chalk change as she gets older? Does she ever mentor a younger witch?

The Midnight Library - Kazuno Kohara
-Any
[Sign-up notes]
This is a sweet little children's book about a library that opens after dark to serve the local animals, and it's such a joy!
I don't really think anyone's likely to offer this (if you did match to me on this fandom: hi!!! wow!!!exciting!!!) but I'm adding it just in case. If you can get hold of the book, it's a five minute read and completely adorable, but if not, the publisher released enough of the book (collected in the post I linked above) that you can get a good idea of it just from that.
I'm currently a library studies student, so pretty much anything adding on to this story/world would be amazing for me! I'd prefer a story in the same tone as the book (no sex, please!), but if you wanted to write... I don't know, a super dramatic story about the Midnight Library operating as a haven for animals during a natural disaster, or a strategic planning report of the library's animal demographic, that's absolutely fine too. I would be delighted! Picture books are often such a contained world, but I feel like this one has a huge amount of room to sprawl out into and explore. What books do the various animals like to read? How did the owls learn to shelve, how did they come to live with the librarian? How are the books organised? Will the squirrel band go on to great things? What does the little wolf read next? How did they all find out about the library? Why is it only open at night?
I hope that at least some of this is helpful to you, and that you have a great yuletide! If you want to find me elsewhere: my AO3 name is suth and my tumblr is slightly.
Thanks again!

dear yuletide author!
Oct. 14th, 2013 08:49 pmHello, dear yuletide author!
Thanks for doing this! I can't wait to see what you write for me :)
Things I love: people supporting each other (especially through unspoken actions), fumbly awkward sex that is still thoroughly enjoyed by everybody involved, fic in the same mood/tone as the canon, hugs, unconventional and non-traditional relationships that work, trinkets and mementoes, traditions and routines, gentle teasing, in-jokes between characters, people understanding each other without needing to be good at communication, intimacy and (well-placed) trust, feeling comfortable/at home in new places or with new people, teaching/learning new skills.
Gen, slash, femslash and het are all fine by me!
Firm things to avoid: I have triggers to do with grief, especially around public grief and commemoration. I realise that’s not very likely to be an issue in most things here, but, just in case. And obviously, this means definitely no character death, please! I can handle a very minor character death if it’s offscreen and/or canonical, and the fic is not about it, but I avoid almost all fic that goes beyond that. Please don't dwell on grief, funerals, or anything along those lines!
General things I don’t care for: Self injury, gore/violence, serious illness, underage or teacher/student relationships, non- and dub-con, abusive relationships, sexual violence, and incest. Any kind of supernatural AU (werewolves, vampires, etc.), mafia/crime/gang AUs, jealousy/possessiveness, genderswaps or bends, deaging, unrequited love, BDSM, apocalypse scenarios, and secret relationships. Ambiguous or unresolved endings.

Seven Kingdoms Trilogy - Kristin Cashore
Bitterblue & Katsa
[I would love to know more about their friendship! Either between Graceling and Bitterblue, or after Bitterblue ends. I love these characters and this series in general, though, so I'm bound to like almost anything involving either of them. If you want to bring in other characters from the series as well, that would be grand, but please no more Leck than absolutely necessary.]
I really enjoyed this series! I read it all this year, and Bitterblue was my favourite book, with Katsa probably my favourite character overall. I found their interactions in Bitterblue really interesting and would love to read more about them working together, being friends, near-family. I ship Katsa/Po, and am not invested in Bitterblue/Anybody. I love the Seven Kingdoms setting, and would enjoy reading more detail about it, but would prefer not to read a fic that dwells on Leck's legacy within it. Maybe fic about Katsa and Bitterblue visiting Fire? Bitterblue hanging out with Katsa when she's briefly at court between adventures? I have no prompt-of-the-heart here, I just want more of these girls!
Scandal (TV)
Olivia Pope & Huck
[I would love to know more about their friendship! At any point in its development, really. Past, present or future! Maybe my favourite thing in the show is Huck's intense but silent devotion to Liv, and the way he chooses to show that (e.g. standing guard over her when she needed a moment in S1, my god), and the way she reciprocates that devotion in 'Spies Like Us', so anything that includes a moment of that would be precious to me.]
I love these two! They embody one of my favourite things in fictional friendships: silent, intense understanding. They mean so much to one another, so deeply, and they're all about showing that. I don't see them as romantically involved and would rather read about them as purely being friends.
Also, I requested this before I watched 302! Oh, my goodness. No spoilers, but oh my goodness. I'd love to read about Liv&Huck.
Eleanor & Park - Rainbow Rowell
Eleanor Douglas
[What does Eleanor grow up to be and to do? I just want to know everything post-canon about her life! I don't mind if that means her finding Park again, or just thinking of him fondly as a first love but nothing more. I'd be happy to know more about Park post-novel too, but it's really only Eleanor I'm invested in here. I want to know what she does with her life now--I don't really have any idea about what that might be! But I'd like her to be happy.]
I really liked that the story ended with Eleanor & Park apart, but the ambiguity of the novel's closing irritated me (I like my stories to end at least relatively neatly, with no crucial questions left over). I don't particularly want a fix-it, as I don't mind if they're together or not (you can decide!), but I'd love to read about where Eleanor is in ten, twenty years down the line. Has she settled somewhere? Does she think of her youth often? Does it bother her, or has she flown past it? Is she involved in music as a career, or just a big fan still? Has she grown to be more comfortable with herself, or is that still a daily struggle? I'd like her to be generally happy, but I don't need sugar-sweet, 2.4 children and a puppy happy. Just... not sad? And if you'd like to write about Park, too, that's fine! I just really fell for Eleanor.
Body (movie concept)
[Anything for this thing will delight me! I loved all the fic for it last year, and would love to see an alternate version of the plot, a deleted scene, a continuation, an AU, etc.
My favourite thing about Back Home is the strength and integrity of Rusty as a female character (and as a growing child). She's a brilliantly stubborn and determined and solid character, and I enjoy her enormously. I like how her insecurities play off against her strengths, and I share her enjoyment of making things and being outdoors. I also love her relationship with Charlie, and would love to read about that bond deepening and strengthening over time.
My only firm 'no' particular to this fandom is the first school setting: I'd really rather not read about that sort of situation, please. I'd much prefer something set during Rusty's time at the River School, or in the future post-canon when she's out of school.
I like all the other characters in the book, barring Rusty's father, so appearances from any of them would be welcome, should you want to include them!

I hope that wasn't so long your eyes glazed over and your brain froze up, dear writer. Feel free to ignore any of my prompts or suggestions if you have an idea that overtakes you, or something in particular you want to explore.
I hope you enjoy writing for me, and have a lovely yuletide!

Please don't think I'm unenthusiastic about this request because I haven't added a lot! There's just only so much you can say with so little to go on.

Crawling into the rut with me, and holding my chin up
Delays- Hideaway (demo arrangement) (download)
Without a second thought you found the words to explain me,
Without a second look you tried to open my mind,
Well I know that you are waiting and your patience is failing,
But I know that I’ll get there in a matter of time.
Laura Veirs- Make Something Good (download)
It’s gonna take a long long time,
But we’re gonna make something so fine.

a with you in any water fanmix
Patrick Wolf- Overture (download)
It's wonderful what a smile can hide
If the teeth shine bright and it's nice and wide
It's so magical, all you can keep inside
And if you bury it deep no one can find a thing, no
Diane Cluck- All I Bring You Is Love (download)
Don't you see I bring you only love
No matter what it looks like…
Le Tigre- Eau d’Bedroom Dancing (download)
I'm in the sky when I'm on my floor
The world's a mess and you're my only cure
Ryan Adams- I Taught Myself How to Grow Old (download)
I taught myself how to grow
'Til I was crooked on the outside, inside's broke
I taught myself how to grow old…
Most of the time I got nothing to say
When I do it's nothing and nobody's there to listen anyway
I know I'm probably better off this way
I just listen to the voices on the TV 'til I'm tired
My eyes grow heavy and I fade away
Graham Coxon- A Day Is Far Too Long (download)
And I thought pain was clean
And I thought hearts were strong
But bones aren't sticks anymore
And a day is far too long
The Accidental- I Can Hear Your Voice (download)
Don't want to go back
Don't know if I can
Got a full blown yellow attack
Got a big black bird on my back
The Mountain Goats- Maybe Sprout Wings (download)
A bad dream shook me in my sleep
And I woke up sweating
Ran through the dark to the shower
Already forgetting...
Try to think good thoughts
Trying to find my way clear
The Cooper Temple Clause- On. Off. On. (download)
We've got treatment, we've got city slick
Messages on the hush-hush
Machines can't work, this thing's got skin
Magazines and liars,
Hooks and chains to tear you down.
Joel Plaskett Emergency- Unconditional Love (download)
Hearts that are heavy
And souls that can't swim
Could drown in decisions
Before they begin
The Lucksmiths- California in Popular Song (download)
I think it only fair to warn you
All those songs about California lied
The stars won’t shine tonight
It isn’t going to be alright
Beck- Guess I’m Doing Fine (download)
Now I bade a friend farewell
I can do whatever pleases me.
It's only lies that I'm living
It's only tears that I'm crying
It's only you that I'm losing
Guess I'm doing fine
KT Tunstall- Funnyman (download)
Said you feel like a bruise
On a beautiful body.
And all the damage you do
Is so honest and true
I don't want to feel sorry for you.
The Research- I Love You But (download)
I love I love I love I love I love you
But I'm scared I'll fuck it up
It's not that I don't love you
I'm just scared I'll fuck it up
The Veils- The Nowhere Man (download)
If you want me
Then you've found me
With time out of mind
65daysofstatic- Don’t Go Down To Sorrow (download)
(instrumental)
Malcolm Middleton- Fight Like the Night (download)
You can be my hero, by not letting me down
Not letting me down again, and being around
You can be my hero, by crawling into the rut
Crawling into the rut with me, and holding my chin up

Jun. 28th, 2011 02:35 am(I am just posting this here because tumblr's being weird about messages, move along, move along!)
( gender-neutral songs about love )
( gender-neutral songs about love )
So, this was incredibly difficult and also fun! I started it in October, after I saw the film for the first time...
According to last.fm, I listened to each of these songs 60-80 times in the process of putting the mix together. So, uh, this has taken some time? Also there are 35 tracks, because making decisions is hard! So this is more of a fanboxset, really, but I didn’t think anyone would mind... there's a download link for each song, and a .zip file of all the songs at the end of the post. If you need me to break that .zip down into smaller chunks, I think I'm able to do that, so let me know!
There are probably too many Cooper Temple Clause songs on here (three), but it’s not my fault that they wrote such an applicable album! And the title is from a Mountain Goats song, but not the one I used in the actual mix. Okay? Okay. Enjoy!
*

"I never met a man in my life whom I admired and loved more than you, but I never could show you how much your friendship meant to me, for you had much to give and I nothing."

I do actually want a beta (or will do, when I've finished my dissertation) for Natural History Museum AU and Least said soonest mended. If anybody's up for that...?

Apr. 25th, 2010 01:49 amI just got spoiled for Doctor Who. BOO. I should've watched it already, though, so I guess I had it coming.
Anyway! Lyrics meme!
( under the cut )
Also, I said nothing on here about the fact that April 24th marks the anniversary of the Coopers splitting up. I don't know if there's really anything left to say about that, but yeah. Silly boys.

Jan. 17th, 2010 09:05 pmI am SO CONFUSED by
help_haiti. Not in a bad way, just in my usual 'trade! on the internets! oh my!' way, which means it's going to take me a good hour before I can work out how the hell I do stuff. But I'm going to do stuff! And you should, too! And all that!

Dec. 23rd, 2009 02:56 amHappy Christmas, Merlin fans. Here's an over-ambitious fanmix!
This is, in theory, a mix celebrating Merlin and Arthur's ~platonic love~ through the years, beginning with Merlin's arrival in the city, and ending- sort of vaguely- with the glory years of Camelot. And then it has bonus tracks!
( Our Smallest Adventures )

Also, I am starting to think The Boys Are Back In Town might actually really be my proper favourite song.
